Resident Evil Requiem has surpassed $500 million in revenue, with sales figures revealing a striking imbalance across platforms. According to analysis from Alinea Analytics, a mere 8.6% of the game's 8.5 million units sold were purchased on Xbox consoles. In contrast, PlayStation 5 accounted for 48.1% of sales, with PC via Steam following closely at 43.4%.
This disparity highlights ongoing challenges for Xbox in the current console generation. While the PS5 has sold over 95 million units shipped, the Xbox Series X/S is believed to have sold just over 35 million units, a figure that lags behind the previous generation's Xbox One. The sales split for Resident Evil Requiem is particularly concerning for Microsoft, as it suggests an even larger deficit than hardware sales alone might indicate.
The trend is further supported by recent reports regarding Grand Theft Auto VI preorders, which were also noted to be heavily skewed towards the PS5. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball stated that GTA 6 preorders were "breaking records for Xbox" and "matching our share of the console market." However, the Resident Evil Requiem data suggests that Xbox may be underperforming even relative to its current hardware install base.
Several factors may contribute to this trend. Resident Evil has historically maintained a stronger presence on PlayStation platforms, especially in Japan. However, the significant gap in Requiem's sales suggests that some Xbox owners may be opting to play on PC or even other consoles. The performance of Xbox in this analysis raises questions about player retention and the effectiveness of Microsoft's strategies as the company undergoes significant reorganization.
