Resident Evil Requiem was originally envisioned as an online game before development shifted to focus on the series' signature horror elements, according to producer Masachika Kawata. Kawata detailed this and other developmental insights in the recently released Biohazard 30th Special Mook, a fan book chronicling the Resident Evil franchise.
Kawata explained that director Koshi Nakanishi initially pursued an online direction for Resident Evil Requiem. However, research conducted partway through development yielded unfavorable results, leading the team to abandon the online concept and recommit to the horror genre. This pivot aimed to preserve the core fear that defines the series.
Further revealing the iterative nature of game development, Kawata also discussed the protagonist selection process. Leon was initially considered as the primary character, but the development team determined that his combat proficiency would steer the game too heavily into action, potentially diminishing the horror aspect. Consequently, a new character, Grace, was introduced.
Capcom's decision to withhold full details about Leon's involvement until later in the development cycle was a strategic choice to maintain player interest by balancing both horror and action elements. This approach helped sustain anticipation for the game leading up to its release.
This isn't the first time Capcom has considered online multiplayer for a mainline Resident Evil title. Franchise producer Jun Takeuchi revealed in 2022 that Resident Evil 7 was also initially pushed by management to include multiplayer and microtransactions. However, the team ultimately opted against these features, deeming them unsuitable for the desired single-player horror experience.
Capcom continues to expand the Resident Evil universe with various projects, including a recent film adaptation and the upcoming Code Veronica remake. The decision to steer Resident Evil Requiem away from an online format leaves open the possibility for future online Resident Evil titles, perhaps reminiscent of the Outbreak series.
