The expansive narrative of Capcom's long-running Resident Evil series may reach its conclusion within the next ten years, according to executive producer Jun Takeuchi. In a recent interview with Yahoo Japan, Takeuchi explained that while the series' story was not initially planned out in its entirety, a ten-year strategy was developed during the creation of Resident Evil 2 Remake.
"With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years," Takeuchi stated. He noted that the order of the recent remakes carries significance when viewed in retrospect.
Despite the potential for a narrative endgame, Takeuchi assured fans that multiple new Resident Evil titles are still planned. He declined to provide specific details to avoid spoiling the experience for players.
The Resident Evil franchise has seen a significant resurgence in recent years, particularly following the success of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Resident Evil 2 Remake stands as the best-selling game in the franchise, and its latest installment, Resident Evil Requiem, has generated over $500 million in revenue, contributing significantly to console sales in Japan. Several Resident Evil titles, including Resident Evil 2 Remake, RE7, Resident Evil 4, RE3, and Requiem, were among Capcom's top ten best-selling games in the first half of its 2027 fiscal year.
Looking ahead, fans can anticipate the Resident Evil Code Veronica remake early next year. Additionally, there are indications of a story mode DLC for Requiem that may involve the character Spencer. While Zach Cregger's recent Resident Evil movie received positive reviews and performed well at the box office, Cregger has expressed that he is unlikely to direct a sequel, despite having ideas for future installments.
