The A Plague Tale series, known for its exceptional emotional storytelling, tense stealth, and, of course, rats, is charting a new course with Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. This prequel adventure, set 15 years before the events of A Plague Tale: Requiem, shifts focus from Amicia and Hugo de Rune to the fan-favorite companion Sophia. Players will step into the shoes of a younger Sophia on a quest to a mythical island, trading the familiar sneaking and slingshots for sword duels and tomb raiding, with a notable inclusion of the Greek myth of the Minotaur.
Charting A New Course
Developer Asobo Studio aimed to offer fans a fresh experience while expanding the A Plague Tale universe after the emotionally taxing narrative of Requiem. Creative director Eric Chort explained that the team wanted a break from the grim storytelling and explored new gameplay avenues. They found inspiration in action-adventure titles like Tomb Raider and Uncharted, seeking a new challenge. Sophia, a fierce smuggler and sailor with a mysterious past, became the ideal character to build this new gameplay around. Her established combat prowess and past hinted at a history of violence, providing fertile ground for narrative exploration. Lead writer Carol-Ann Bañuls elaborated that this younger Sophia is a cunning force but lacks the inner calm seen in Requiem, presenting a character with visible cracks beneath her strong exterior, hinting at past traumas yet to be revealed.
Despite the shift to a more swashbuckling tone, Bañuls assured that the game retains the weighty, emotional storytelling A Plague Tale is known for, with Sophia expected to face significant mental and physical trials.
A Sharper Edge
The preview focused on Chapter 4: To Hell it Runs, which begins with Sophia and her companion Leni on the legendary Minotaur's Island, near an ancient temple. The pair find their path to the temple blocked by collapsed structures, requiring Sophia to use her journal to sketch clues and find alternative routes. This mechanic, reminiscent of Nathan Drake's approach, highlights the importance of observation in progressing through the game. An encounter with Venetian soldiers eager to plunder the temple's secrets forces Sophia into combat. Her primary tools include a grapple hook, used for traversal, and a formidable sword-and-dagger fighting style. Players can discover up to seven unique swords, each offering distinct perks, though they are optional collectibles. The combat system emphasizes three-hit melee attacks, blocking, dodging, and a crucial parry mechanic. Successfully parrying enemies fills a stagger meter, leaving them open for powerful attacks and executions. The grappling hook can also be used offensively to pull enemies closer, and Sophia's ability to kick foes off ledges provides a visceral and often humorous method of dispatching them.
Combat interactions are dynamic, with enemies capable of being knocked into each other or solid surfaces, causing realistic collisions and staggers. This allows for crowd management and strategic takedowns. Contextual executions provide unique kill animations based on positioning. Companions like Leni also assist in battles. Asobo drew inspiration from a wide range of action games, including Marvel's Spider-Man, the Batman: Arkham series, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Sifu, and notably, Ghost of Tsushima, to develop Sophia's agile, tricky, and visceral combat style.## Tomb Raiding
Beyond combat, Resonance features environmental puzzles that require keen observation and the use of a mysterious orb Sophia carries. This artifact, when exposed to sunlight, reveals hidden markings crucial for solving riddles. One puzzle involved using the orb to identify safe pressure plates, while another required navigating a hidden maze on the floor to unlock a door. The game balances puzzle-solving and combat, with hints available from companions. Exploration also yields collectible relics and Resonance Points, used to unlock skills. The experience is described as a directed one, similar in scope to previous A Plague Tale titles, rather than an open-world structure.
Later in the chapter, a playable flashback transports players to a past version of the temple, where they control the legendary hero Theseus battling Minoan soldiers. These visions are central to Sophia's presence on the island and her personal journey. The Minotaur myth is thematically linked to the narrative, symbolizing violence, instinct, and loss of control, resonating with Sophia's own struggles with vulnerability. After the flashback, Sophia gains the ability to perform a Focus Attack, a powerful sweeping assault, suggesting that these historical encounters may unlock new combat abilities for her.
All In The Name
Notably absent from the gameplay preview were the rats that defined the earlier A Plague Tale entries. While developer hints suggest the Macula curse has no direct ties to the Minotaur myth and may not be present, the island is said to hold other otherworldly secrets. The game’s title, Resonance, carries dual meanings. According to Bañuls, it refers to both the way sound echoes and a
