Riftbound's upcoming fourth expansion, Vendetta, is set to introduce a "dueling rivals" theme, bringing new mechanics and strategic depth to the digital card game. Lead designer Dave Guskin shared insights into the expansion's development and its thematic focus during a recent play session.
New Mechanics: Empower and Flow
Vendetta introduces two key mechanics: Empower and Flow. Empower allows a card to access an additional effect when it is in an empowered state. However, this state is temporary; once the additional effect is used or the unit leaves play, the card becomes disempowered. Guskin highlighted Zed from the Showdown deck as an example, whose Legend card gains Empower when a player banishes one of their own cards. This allows players to exhaust Zed to disempower him, then discard a card to draw another, offering a way to gain card advantage.
The Flow mechanic functions similarly to Magic: The Gathering's Flashback. After a card with Flow is played, it can be played again from the trash for its Flow cost, after which it is banished. Shen's signature spell, Shadow Dash, exemplifies the power of Flow cards.
Competitive Play and Meta Predictions
Guskin believes Kennen, a purple/yellow deck that leverages multiple mechanics, will be a strong contender in the competitive scene. He noted that while decks in Vendetta have thematic or mechanical connections, such as one focusing on holding and another on conquering, the success of one champion like Zed does not automatically guarantee the strength of their rival, Shen. Nonetheless, Guskin expressed a desire to see a prominent match between Shen and Zed in a major tournament, aligning with the expansion's rival-centric theme.
The First Anniversary and Player Feedback
As Riftbound approaches its first anniversary in the US on October 31, the development team is considering potential celebrations. Guskin mentioned that plans are in the early stages and encompass internal excitement, player-facing retrospectives on the year's sets, and potential premier-level competition events. The game also marks its first anniversary in China prior to its global launch.
Regarding player feedback, Guskin addressed concerns about the Comprehensive Rules Guide, stating that while updates are planned, the team aims for less frequent but more substantial changes to maintain game balance and intuitiveness. He also confirmed that the game will increasingly feature original art commissioned specifically for Riftbound, rather than solely relying on existing League of Legends art, to further develop the game's unique visual identity.
Riftbound Vendetta is scheduled for release on July 31 in major retailers and local game stores.
