Riot Games has officially confirmed the end of active development for its League of Legends-themed fighting game, 2XKO. The developer announced on Thursday that while remaining work-in-progress content will be completed, the game's development will cease in December.
According to Riot, despite an active player community and initial interest, the game has not achieved sufficient player retention to support a sustainable future. "We haven’t seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability," the company stated on its official website. An evaluation of the game's performance, including revenue, retention, and engagement metrics, revealed that even significant updates failed to create sustained positive change in the game's trajectory. Riot noted that 2XKO incurs substantial operating costs that are not offset by its revenue, with engagement remaining relatively flat.
The decision to end active development comes less than a year after 2XKO's launch in October 2025, following nearly a decade in development. The game features a selection of League of Legends champions in 2v2 tag-team battles, and is set to include 17 playable characters by the time development concludes. At Evo 2026, 2XKO was the third most popular game featured in the tournament, behind Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8.
Riot Games will be releasing two additional champions, Lux and Samira, along with feature improvements and content updates through the end of 2026. Lux, described as a "shoto-inspired character with a simple kit," will arrive in September with patch 1.3.1. Samira, a bounty hunter utilizing both sword and dual pistols, is slated for an October release. A final bug-fix patch is scheduled for December.
Sales of KO Points, 2XKO's premium currency, have ceased, and all currently available champions will be unlocked. Riot Games will also be issuing refunds for all purchases made in 2XKO on or before August 20. For PC players, refunds for KO Points and Starter Edition purchases will be processed to the original payment method over the coming weeks, with a target completion by November 2026. PlayStation and Xbox players will receive refunds through their respective platform providers, who may contact players for confirmation details.
2XKO will remain playable online and offline beyond 2026, with Riot Games committing to providing advance notice should any changes occur to server availability. The game is currently available for free download on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
