Riot Games has announced the cessation of active development for its 2v2 fighting game, 2XKO, six months after significant layoffs impacted the project. While servers for online play will continue to operate and the game will remain playable offline, all active development will conclude by the end of 2026.

In an update, Riot Games stated that despite a community of players engaging with the game daily, it has not attracted a large enough player base for long-term sustainability. The studio noted that while dedicated fans of tag fighters appreciated 2XKO, many other fighting game enthusiasts found it difficult to remain engaged. This lack of sustained player growth was the primary factor leading to the decision.

New content will continue to be released through the remainder of the year, including two additional fighters and various bug fixes and feature improvements. A final patch addressing bugs is scheduled for December. All fighters will be unlocked for all players, and any purchases made on or before August 20 will be fully refunded.

First speculated in 2017 and officially confirmed in 2019, the fighting game, initially known by other working titles, eventually became 2XKO. It officially launched in January 2026. Player numbers are not publicly available as the game is not on Steam, but Riot's decision to drastically reduce the development team shortly after launch suggested early concerns about player engagement. Despite Riot's February commitment to the game, the developer has now decided to pull the plug.

Riot is working to provide a supportive transition for the community, including players, tournament organizers, competitors, and content creators who have supported the game. A roadmap detailing the remaining updates has been shared.
