Roblox has experienced a significant drop in both daily active users and in-game spending since its peak last summer. The platform’s daily active users have fallen to 123 million from a high of 152 million. This decline coincides with the waning popularity of viral games such as "Grow a Garden" and "Steal the Brainrot," which drove significant engagement and spending in the previous year.
Roblox attributes this downturn, particularly the decrease in monetization per hour, to its strategic decision to prioritize higher-quality, more engaging games that foster long-term player retention. This new approach moves away from recommending titles that emphasize short-term monetization. The company’s financial performance has been impacted, with its share price falling 70 percent from its previous peak, erasing billions in market value.
During a recent investor call, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki expressed optimism about the shift, stating that data indicates a positive lift in the quality and stickiness of engagement in games that are now being recommended. He believes that the benefits of improved retention will compound into future growth, outweighing the current short-term impacts.
However, Roblox CFO Naveen K. Chopra acknowledged that monetization, measured in bookings per hour, fell below forecasts, especially within the under-13 demographic. He attributed this shortfall to a greater-than-expected shift in engagement from highly monetizing viral games of the previous year to newer and evergreen experiences that generate less revenue per hour. The company anticipates continued challenges, forecasting revenue to be down 14-18% in the next quarter and declined to provide a forecast for the final quarter of the year.
Financial analysts have noted the negative trend, with Morningstar senior equity analyst Matthew Dolgin stating that Roblox had a "terrible second quarter across virtually every engagement and payment metric." He added that "everything took a step backwards" and that growth is now a point of concern.
In parallel with this strategy shift, Roblox has also introduced more robust safety features, including age verification for many communication tools, which may have introduced additional friction for some users. The company has also recently announced "Build," a new AI-powered creation tool designed to allow users to generate basic games from text prompts directly within the Roblox mobile application.
