Rockstar Games has applied censorship to the extended gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 when it was uploaded to China's Bilibili platform. The modified trailer features blurred-out elements that include smoking, suggestive dancing, bloody bodies, and underwear.
Screenshots posted on GTA Forums by user BDF and confirmed by Kotaku reveal these alterations in the trailer hosted on Rockstar's official Bilibili channel. The censorship is particularly noticeable during scenes set in a nightclub, where large portions of the screen are blurred. While the specific reasons for the censorship are not officially stated, some Chinese gamers have suggested it reflects a perception by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, that China is a heavily restrictive market for mature content.
Interestingly, Rockstar initially uploaded an uncensored version of the extended trailer to Bilibili, which remained available until August 31 before being replaced by the altered version. However, other previously released Grand Theft Auto 6 trailers on the same platform remain unedited. This selective censorship of the extended look has led to confusion, as the unedited, uncensored gameplay video is still accessible on Rockstar's official website within China, albeit with Chinese subtitles and without the use of a VPN.
BDF also claims that Take-Two Interactive is actively working to remove re-uploads of the uncensored trailer from various platforms, citing an instance where a friend's shared original gameplay trailer was taken down. Kotaku has reached out to Rockstar Games for further comment on the matter.
