Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 is a Single-Player Experience, Leaves GTA Online Future Unclear

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will be a "single-player experience," a clarification that has significant implications for the game's launch and the future of its popular online component. Preorder listings for the game also indicate that the base $80 purchase will not bundle a new iteration of GTA Online.

While this announcement fuels speculation about a potential future release for a new GTA Online, the exact nature of its rollout remains uncertain. Questions linger on whether it will be integrated as a free component within GTA 6, or offered as a separate, potentially higher-priced, standalone product.

The PlayStation Store explicitly labels GTA 6 as a single-player-only title. Rockstar's recent communications emphasize the current GTA Online as the primary focus for multiplayer engagement. Preordering any edition of Grand Theft Auto VI through the PlayStation or Microsoft Stores includes a complimentary month of GTA+, which offers various in-game benefits for the existing GTA Online, such as a monthly cash deposit, discounted Shark Cards, access to special vehicles, and a rotating selection of classic Rockstar Games titles.

The absence of a new GTA Online at GTA 6's launch is not entirely surprising, given the immense and ongoing financial success of GTA Online for both Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. The existing online mode's availability on PC, a platform excluded from GTA 6's day-one release, is expected to help maintain its momentum.

In previous discussions about the future of GTA Online, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick drew parallels to the NBA 2K Online franchise in Asia. He noted that NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, and its successor NBA 2K Online 2, released in 2017, have been maintained simultaneously. Zelnick stated that Rockstar has a history of supporting legacy titles as long as a player community remains engaged, suggesting that a potential GTA Online 2 would not necessarily mean the discontinuation of the current GTA Online.

This suggests that if a successor to GTA Online is indeed planned, it might not come at the expense of the existing game. However, fans anticipating an immediate successor may need to temper their expectations. In the interim, Rockstar is providing incentives for players to engage with the current GTA Online through the GTA+ subscription service as part of the Grand Theft Auto VI preorder bonuses.
