Rockstar Details New Wanted System, NPC Interactions, and Progression in GTA 6

Rockstar Games has unveiled several new details about Grand Theft Auto 6, touching upon its intricate Wanted system, NPC interactions, progression mechanics, and mission design. These insights, shared in a recent IGN interview and other previews, suggest a more complex and reactive gameplay experience than in previous titles.

Enhanced World Interaction and Progression

GTA 6 is set to feature a world rich with spontaneous events and opportunities for interaction, akin to Red Dead Redemption 2. Players may encounter unique NPCs, such as a man in a dumpster offering legal advice, and discover location-specific items like hairstyles in shops, encouraging thorough exploration of the game's map. However, progression will be more gated than in past GTA installments. Initially, certain in-game features, like access to some parked cars, will be locked until players advance further into the game, though carjacking will remain an option. Notably, accumulating sufficient in-game currency will become a prerequisite for progressing through the main story, with players likely having a limit on the amount of cash they can carry.

Nuances in the Wanted System and Mission Design

The Wanted system in GTA 6 introduces a new element: hollowed-out stars. These signify that law enforcement is aware a crime has occurred but does not yet know the perpetrator's identity. While a single full star will be manageable and relatively easy to lose, escalating police attention will require more strategic evasion. Missions are designed to offer multiple solutions, allowing players to approach objectives through various routes. Although some segments, like car chases, may be more scripted, they will transition into gameplay where player choices are paramount. Rockstar aims for missions to feel integrated with the open world, meaning actions possible in the wider game should also be feasible within mission parameters.

The dual protagonist system, featuring Jason and Lucia, adds another layer of gameplay. Players can choose to keep the characters together for combined firepower or split them up to manage law enforcement attention. Following critical events, players can text Jason or Lucia to check on their status, deepening the narrative connection.

Reactive NPCs and Dialogue

GTA 6 will feature a diverse cast of NPCs with an extensive range of unique dialogue. It's reported that players might not hear repeated lines for up to 20 minutes if they remain in one spot. Beyond simply filling the soundscape, these NPCs will react to the player's presence. Lingering too close or for too long may prompt them to initiate conversations, move away, or even become hostile, contributing to a more dynamic and believable game world.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19.
