Rockstar Games Cracks Down on Commercialized Modding Ahead of GTA 6

Rockstar Games has released a new modding policy ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6's launch, which includes strict rules against unauthorized commercialization. This move appears aimed at preventing the kind of monetized roleplaying (RP) server models that have become popular in GTA 5.

The developer's updated guidelines, available on its website, detail several restrictions. These include prohibitions on using intellectual property without permission, creating pornographic content, engaging in bullying, or endorsing violent extremism. Modders are also barred from making Rockstar's games available on unreleased platforms or transferring assets between titles.

A significant portion of the policy directly addresses influencer plans for GTA 6. Rockstar explicitly forbids the exchange of real money for virtual currency or items within modded content. Furthermore, gambling within modded environments using real money is prohibited, as is the promotion of any third-party sponsored content. This means that concepts pitched by some influencers, such as enabling players to earn a living wage through in-game activities in GTA 6 RP servers, will not be possible without Rockstar's explicit approval.

While GTA 6 is currently set to launch on consoles, PC players will have to wait. Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has indicated that a PC version is planned, though a release window has not been specified. It is speculated that a PC release could follow within a year of the console launch, given the growing popularity of PC gaming and the high demand for the title.
