Rockstar Games has refuted claims that Grand Theft Auto VI cost $1.5 billion to develop, though the studio has not revealed the actual development budget for the highly anticipated title.
While the exact investment remains undisclosed, the figure of $1.5 billion had been widely circulated, drawing comparisons to the construction cost of Dubai's Burj Khalifa skyscraper. Given the extensive development period, the involvement of multiple studios including a dedicated NPC team in Los Angeles, and a large workforce, the final cost is presumed to be substantial.
Anticipation for GTA 6 is exceptionally high, with reports suggesting over 5 million copies have been pre-ordered, potentially generating more than half a billion dollars. Projections indicate that pre-orders could reach 25 million by launch day, translating to approximately $2 billion in sales. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has cautioned that preorders do not guarantee final sales, and these figures may fluctuate.
Even before its release, GTA 6 has demonstrated commercial success through its merchandise. The $400 collector's edition, featuring exclusive in-game items and physical swag, has proven popular since its preorder availability.
Rockstar Games has remained silent on an online multiplayer component for GTA 6, though speculation suggests a potential launch in 2027. The company's previous success with GTA Online, which reportedly generates hundreds of millions in annual revenue, fuels expectations for a similarly profitable online mode in the new title. However, industry veteran Chet Faliszek has suggested that retaining GTA Online players may be challenging, as many are deeply invested in their existing virtual spaces.
Finding a balance to satisfy both new and existing player bases will likely be a key consideration for Rockstar as they plan the GTA 6 online experience. This development comes as Rockstar also recently discussed the internal debates regarding the game's realism and their confidence in delivering future titles without decade-long gaps.
