Rockstar Games has been developing Grand Theft Auto 6 in some capacity since 2014, with the studio's head of development and co-studio head Rob Nelson offering a look into their meticulous creation process. Speaking to Love magazine, Nelson described a long-term commitment from the senior team, emphasizing a shared understanding of their objectives.
The development schedule and strategy employed by Rockstar involve building assets and systems incrementally, then integrating them into the game across various development areas. This process is structured around eight-week milestones. At the end of each milestone, the team evaluates the assembled content, makes extensive notes, and uses these to guide the focus for the subsequent period. This iterative approach, characterized by years of detailed work and continuous course correction, is driven by a persistent vision for the final product, even when that precise feeling has yet to be fully realized.
Filling the expansive world of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is noted to include over 150 animal species and hundreds of vehicles, involves significant resource allocation. Rockstar established a dedicated writers' room in Los Angeles specifically for crafting pedestrian dialogue. According to James Horton, GTA 6's open-world writing director, this team worked closely with a production team in L.A. to generate the thousands of unique non-player characters featured in the game.
Horton stressed that there are no shortcuts to creating such a detailed world. The focus is on providing the right people with the necessary resources to build a game that is not only vast and diverse but also internally consistent. The aim is for the environment to be immersive, capturing the atmosphere of a bustling city street with countless conversations, while also maintaining believability when players choose to focus on individual interactions.
