Rockstar Games has announced that players who own Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 4 or digital Xbox One can now upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions for free. This offer begins on June 18.

The free upgrade path was not available when the enhanced versions of Grand Theft Auto V first launched on March 15, 2022. At that time, the current-generation editions were priced at $39.99 and included Grand Theft Auto Online. These upgraded versions feature visual enhancements such as up to 4K resolution, HDR support, ray tracing, improved textures, increased draw distances, and frame rates up to 60 frames per second. The PlayStation 5 version also benefits from 3D audio and DualSense controller haptic feedback. Players can also transfer their story mode progress from the last-generation consoles.

PC players will also be able to make a similar upgrade from the Legacy edition to the Enhanced edition at no charge. Additionally, Grand Theft Auto V's story mode is available to GTA+ members as part of the GTA+ Games Library.

This announcement comes as anticipation builds for the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The free upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V may serve as an incentive for players to revisit the title or experience it for the first time in its most advanced form. The news also coincides with an upcoming July update for Grand Theft Auto Online, titled The Kortz Center Heist.
