Rockstar Games is providing a free upgrade path for Grand Theft Auto V to players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One who wish to transition to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the title. This offer extends to owners of any PS4 edition, physical or digital, and digital-only Xbox One owners. PC players can also receive a free upgrade from the legacy version of GTA V to its enhanced counterpart.
The enhanced versions of GTA V, which first released in 2022, introduced several improvements for current-generation consoles. These include a fidelity mode supporting up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS frame rates, along with optimizations for faster storage, 3D audio, and DualSense haptic feedback on PlayStation 5. Previously, acquiring these upgraded versions required a purchase of approximately $40, with limited-time upgrade paths and discounted bundles having since expired.
Players taking advantage of this offer can migrate both their GTA V story progress and GTA Online data from their last-generation consoles to the new ones. This migration is described as a straightforward, one-time process, ensuring that years of in-game progress are preserved.
This announcement coincides with details emerging about the next major GTA Online update, which will include a new heist titled 'The Kortz Center Heist'. This new criminal endeavor, allowing players to steal artworks from a gallery, is slated to arrive in July and will be accessible to players on both last-gen and current-gen consoles. The timing of the free upgrade offer, preceding the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6—which will be exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S—suggests Rockstar may be encouraging players to move to newer platforms.
