Rockstar Games has stated that its next title following the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 will not require an eight-year development period. While the company has not revealed what this future project might be, leadership indicated that the extensive work put into GTA 6 has established a robust foundation for subsequent games.
Phil Hooker, co-head of development, explained that the "engine, the tools and the team" built for GTA 6 will enable faster development. He added, "I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content." Aaron Garbut, also a co-head of development, noted that significant changes were made to the game's foundation, which will be retained for future projects.
The release of GTA 6 is scheduled for November, marking eight years since the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's previous major title. Industry observers have speculated about Rockstar's next move, drawing parallels to the period after Grand Theft Auto 3, which saw the rapid release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City a year later. This has led to speculation that another GTA title could follow GTA 6, potentially focusing on a new city.
Fans and industry analysts also anticipate a potential Red Dead Redemption 3. Although Rockstar has not officially confirmed plans for a new entry, former lead writer Dan Houser suggested in the past that RDR3 "will probably happen." Roger Clark, the actor who portrayed Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, has expressed certainty that a third installment will eventually be released, though he cautioned that it would likely be some time away and that his character's story arc was complete.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously acknowledged Red Dead and Grand Theft Auto as prominent franchises for Rockstar, indicating their continued presence in the company's future plans. Clark also noted that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 60 million copies, underscoring the franchise's commercial success.
In related news, actor Jack Black expressed interest in portraying a historical figure named Jack Black, who authored the autobiography "You Can't Win," in a potential Red Dead Redemption 3, should the game come to fruition.
