The rumored remake of the original Resident Evil game entered early production approximately one year ago, according to information shared by prominent horror game insider Dusk Golem. The project is expected to move into full production once development concludes on the Resident Evil Veronica remake, which is slated for a 2027 release.

Golem, who has a history of accurately reporting on Resident Evil titles, indicated on social media that the Resident Evil 1 Remake began its pre-production phase around August or September of last year. Pre-production involves a core team focusing on initial concepting and prototyping before expanding for asset creation and full development.

Further complicating the timeline, Golem also suggested that a remake of Resident Evil Zero entered full production in late 2022. This could position the Resident Evil Zero remake as the next title to be released following Resident Evil Veronica, potentially delaying the Resident Evil 1 Remake.

Rumors of a Resident Evil 1 Remake have circulated for some time. Previously, it was speculated that a remake might coincide with the series' 30th anniversary in 2026, a milestone that has since passed without an official announcement. Instead, Capcom released the mainline entry Resident Evil 9.

Capcom previously remade the original Resident Evil for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, later remastering it in 2015 for multiple platforms. While that remake adhered closely to the original's design, a modern iteration is anticipated to adopt a third-person perspective and incorporate expanded gameplay features, similar to the Resident Evil 2 Remake. Given its current stage of development, an official announcement for the Resident Evil 1 Remake is likely still some time away.
