Recent speculation surrounding a new StarCraft game has been tempered by insights from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who stated that the project is unlikely to follow a Destiny-like live-service shooter format.

The stir around a potential new StarCraft title intensified following reports that Nexon had acquired the rights to develop a sequel, coinciding with visual anomalies on the official StarCraft 2 website. These events have fueled anticipation for an official announcement.

Schreier shared his perspective during a conversation with former Polygon guides producer Ryan Gilliam, directly addressing the nature of the rumored game. "I wouldn't count on this StarCraft game being a Destiny-like, I'll say that," Schreier remarked. This comment dashed hopes for some who were looking for another major studio to emulate Destiny's successful model.

Further speculation from Jez Corden, an editor at Windows Central, suggests the game might draw inspiration from Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and elements of the Far Cry series. Corden noted on X that his understanding was that the game is "more Space Marine 2 / Far Cry kinda adjacent." The mention of Far Cry is particularly interesting given previous reports that Dan Hay, a former executive producer on the Far Cry series, is leading a StarCraft shooter project at Blizzard. The exact gameplay features Corden is referring to remain unclear, as Space Marine 2 and Far Cry share few direct similarities.

Details about Blizzard's plans for the StarCraft franchise are expected to be revealed at the upcoming BlizzCon event, scheduled for September 12-13. The opening ceremony is widely anticipated as the likely venue for the game's unveiling.
