RuneScape 4 Announced as Full MMO Sequel

Jagex has officially announced RuneScape 4, a full MMO sequel to its long-running fantasy franchise, during the company's annual RuneFest event. The project, currently operating under a working title, originated as a planned expansion for the recent survival game Dragonwilds.

According to reports, playtesters frequently requested a more traditional MMO experience based on Dragonwilds' setting and aesthetic, leading Jagex to pivot the expansion into a full new title. The game is being developed using Unreal Engine, though the specific version is not yet confirmed. The initial target release for the Dragonwilds expansion was 2027, but the transition to a full game will likely push this date back.

The teaser trailer for RuneScape 4 showcased a distinct art style blending elements of RuneScape 3 and the retro appeal of Old School RuneScape. The visuals depicted a medieval town in a valley with floating islands, a dragon rider engaging a three-headed dragon, and a wizard observing the scene. The trailer concluded with the wizard welcoming a new adventurer.

Jagex has a history of numbering its RuneScape releases: RuneScape launched in 2001, RuneScape 2 arrived in 2004 with full 3D rendering, and RuneScape 3, featuring a significant overhaul of art and systems, debuted in 2013. Old School RuneScape, based on a 2007 version of RuneScape 2, remains Jagex's most successful game. It has been confirmed that Old School RuneScape will continue to be supported alongside the development of RuneScape 4. Questions remain regarding the fate of RuneScape 3 and whether character progression will carry over seamlessly to the new title.
