Jagex has announced RuneScape Reignited, a new character type for RuneScape 3 that offers players a completely fresh start. While the initiative aims to attract new players or those wishing to revisit the game without years of accumulated progress, it has been met with apprehension and even protests from a segment of the existing player base.
RuneScape Reignited characters will begin with no progress and operate within an isolated economy. Players can choose to play on existing worlds or on new, Reignited-exclusive worlds. While Reignited and regular characters can interact and form clans, they will not be able to engage in the same boss encounters or trade with each other. According to a developer blog, there will be no new updates exclusive to Reignited characters, and once a character type is selected, it cannot be changed.
This new system has drawn comparisons to creating an Ironman character, though it allows for more social interaction. The announcement blog also highlights the removal of unpopular systems like Treasure Hunter, a move that was previously announced earlier this year as part of the game's 25th-anniversary integrity-focused releases. The Reignited initiative appears to be an effort to onboard new players without the daunting prospect of being far behind established players.
However, many long-time players express concern that Reignited could further fragment the already challenged player base, making it harder to find groups for content. Reddit user RiquaaLz voiced this sentiment, questioning the value for players who have invested thousands of hours and suggesting it could render previous progress meaningless. This concern is echoed by other comments on the RuneScape subreddit, with some players stating the game is too grindy to start over.
Despite Jagex's assurances that neither veteran nor Reignited characters will be favored, skepticism persists among some players regarding the long-term impact on the game's community dynamics and the perceived value of accumulated progress. The success of RuneScape Reignited in revitalizing the game's player base, especially as the potential for a RuneScape 4 looms and Old School RuneScape continues to introduce new features, remains to be seen.
