RuneScape Reignited Canceled Less Than Two Weeks After Announcement

Creative director Mod Ryan announced that RuneScape Reignited, a new game mode designed for both old and seasoned players to start fresh, has been canceled less than two weeks after it was first announced. Jagex made the decision to cancel Reignited in direct response to player feedback.

"We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views," Mod Ryan stated in an official YouTube video and blog post. "It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. Now I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited."

He continued, "It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it. Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community."

RuneScape Reignited was revealed on October 3 during RuneFest 2026. The mode was conceived as a way to allow new and returning players to start with a clean slate, similar to WoW Classic. However, a vocal portion of the game's player base expressed concerns that it would fracture the community, arguing that developers should instead focus on ongoing updates and improvements to the main game.

Despite the cancellation of Reignited, Jagex is offering a 10-day free trial for RuneScape starting December 2. During this trial, new characters, or characters that haven't been members since June 2, will gain access to RuneScape Members worlds and content until December 12.

The development team is also releasing the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, alongside other improvements. The game's 2027 roadmap remains on track, with Plugins scheduled to launch on October 19. Future updates include the conclusion of decade-old storylines, a return to grandmaster quests, and a rework of the Agility skill as part of the "Road to Restoration" initiative.

"The future of RuneScape is still extremely bright," Mod Ryan said. "RuneScape will always be built for and defined by its community. So please keep letting us know when you feel we're getting it wrong and shout with that same energy when you think we're getting it right too."

RuneScape 4 was also announced at RuneFest. This is intended to be a next-generation version of the MMO built on the Unreal Engine, though no release date has been shared.

Player reaction on the RuneScape subreddit has been largely positive regarding the cancellation. Many expressed that the decision to cancel Reignited helps rebuild trust within the community and that they prefer new players join the existing game rather than a separate version. Players also cited previous instances where community feedback led to changes, such as the removal of the Hero Pass and microtransactions, as reasons for the game's longevity.
