Jagex has announced the cancellation of its RuneScape Reignited project, a planned refresh of the 25-year-old MMO, just two weeks after its unveiling. The decision comes after significant feedback from the RuneScape community, with developers acknowledging they "missed the mark" with the concept.
RuneScape Reignited was initially presented at Runefest 2026 and aimed to offer players a fresh start with a new economy, reset world-first achievements, and unique worlds for Reignited accounts. While these players would inhabit the same game world as existing veteran players, they would be unable to trade or party up for boss encounters.
However, the project faced immediate backlash from a segment of the player base. Concerns were raised that Reignited would divert developer attention and resources toward new players at the expense of addressing existing issues and supporting the long-time veteran community. Players suggested that focusing on current problems would be more effective for player retention and attraction than a complete reset.
In a video announcing the cancellation, Mod Ryan stated, “We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views.” He emphasized that the goal is to foster growth for RuneScape, bringing back lapsed players and attracting new ones, but explicitly "never at the expense of our existing community."
