RuneScape Reignited Update Cancelled by Jagex After Player Backlash

Jagex has officially canceled RuneScape Reignited, a new character type and accompanying economy intended to revitalize the long-running MMO. The developer announced the decision following significant backlash from the game's established player community, who expressed concerns about the potential impact on the existing game and economy. A blog post from Jagex stated that the team had "missed the mark on this" and would not be moving forward with the initiative.

"First of all, thank you for all the feedback since the announcement at Runefest," the Jagex post explained. "We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views. It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. Now I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited."

The intention behind Reignited was to attract new players and re-engage returning ones, but Jagex acknowledged that this goal should not come at the expense of their existing community. In place of the canceled feature, the developer will release the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, along with other improvements that have been requested by players.

Jagex also confirmed that a 10-day free trial will still run from December 2nd to December 12th. During this period, new characters and any existing characters that have not been actively members since June 2nd will gain free access to RuneScape's members' worlds and content. This trial period offers an opportunity for players to experience the game, even with the cancellation of the Reignited project.
