Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive, has weighed in on two significant trends shaping the gaming industry: the decline of physical game sales and the escalating price of new consoles. Speaking at Gamescom, Willits acknowledged the industry's shift toward digital distribution, noting his own personal preference for digital convenience.

While acknowledging that Saber Interactive still generates substantial revenue from physical game sales, particularly in Europe, Willits observed that the market dynamics differ in North America. He recalled a recent instance where a fan requested his autograph on a physical copy of Doom 3, a game he worked on during his tenure at id Software. This personal connection to physical media led him to express that he will "miss that in the future."

Willits also touched upon the future of game ownership, proposing a speculative concept of an "AI box." This hypothetical device would allow players to "upload all your games" into a centralized digital collection, potentially offering a new way to manage and access a library of digital titles.

The rising cost of video game consoles was another key point of discussion. Willits described the current price of new consoles as "shocking" and suggested it will be "interesting to see" how manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft navigate this challenge with upcoming hardware releases. Factors such as tariffs and the impact of AI on component prices have contributed to consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S being priced significantly higher than at their launch in 2020. A recent report from Ampere Analysis indicated that next-generation consoles potentially exceeding $1,000 could negatively impact the market. Sony and Microsoft have yet to officially announce pricing or release details for their next-generation hardware.
