Sadie Sink has broken her silence regarding her highly speculated role in the recently released Spider-Man: Brand New Day, confirming she portrays Jean Grey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The revelation follows a year of fan theories and cryptic teases from Marvel Studios. "What a relief," Sink told Variety, reflecting on the successful concealment of her part.

Sink admitted to having limited prior knowledge of the character, stating she was largely unfamiliar with Jean Grey before the role materialized. Her introduction to the character came through meetings with Marvel executives Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, which she described as a "no-brainer" decision. The portrayal in Spider-Man: Brand New Day positions Jean Grey as a complex antagonist, a character Sink views as deeply flawed and driven by past trauma rather than malice. "They told me that I was the villain, but that you’re not actually the villain, which is how I played her," Sink explained. "I don’t really want to lean into, like this bad guy aura. Because in her brain it’s totally justified."

The actress shared that she confided in close industry friends, including Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, early in the process. "You have people that you can trust within the industry to talk about it," she said.

Beyond her current appearance, Sink has engaged in discussions with director Jake Schreier, who is helming an upcoming X-Men film. These conversations have centered on how her version of Jean Grey will integrate into the broader MCU narrative. Sink highlighted the compelling nature of her character's journey, noting that the X-Men's appeal lies in their inherent flaws and struggles with their powers. "The more I’ve gotten into it and researched, what makes them special is that they are all incredibly flawed and maybe have done bad things," she commented. "That makes them more compelling, complex characters and a more complex hero if they don’t start out that way. And they have to find their relationship to their powers."

While the X-Men film currently has no release date and is anticipated to premiere after 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, Sink's Jean Grey stands as one of the initial mutant introductions to the MCU. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved significant box office success, securing the largest opening weekend in domestic history and surpassing Avengers: Endgame. IGN awarded the film a 7/10, praising its focus on the web-slinger's core elements: internal conflict, heroic actions, and iconic style.
