The recent release of the Ascended Heroes collection for the Pokémon Trading Card Game at Sam's Club was marred by significant distribution problems, with numerous reports from both customers and employees alleging a disregard for purchasing limits and preferential treatment for scalpers. The highly anticipated set, known for its desirable artwork, has seen its resale price surge by as much as 450% above its retail value since its initial launch.
Sam's Club had prepared for high demand for the Ascended Heroes Focused Fighter Collection, which offers 15 booster packs for $55.98. An internal memo indicated that the retailer's systems were updated to enforce a limit of two boxes per membership. Employees were also instructed to monitor for customers attempting to circumvent these limits by using multiple memberships. Despite these stated measures and assurances of high stock, many locations experienced overwhelming lines that began forming days before the Tuesday morning drop.
While some Sam's Club locations reportedly managed the release smoothly, a significant number were described as chaotic. One employee claimed that management at their store allegedly made arrangements with the first few individuals possessing multiple memberships, allowing them to purchase large quantities of the product. This resulted in a situation where a limited number of people acquired a substantial portion of the available stock, leaving many others in line without any boxes, despite the store initially having enough for a much larger segment of the queue.
Similar accounts have surfaced online, accompanied by images of customers openly exceeding the stated purchase limits. In another reported incident, customers who had received tickets, intended to guarantee their ability to purchase boxes, were informed that the store was already sold out, even though they were positioned near the front of the line.
One consequence of the disorganized release involved an employee being terminated for attempting to cut in line during the opening rush. Meanwhile, Sam's Club members were still anticipating an online release of the Ascended Heroes box later on Tuesday evening, a virtual sale often complicated by bot activity that quickly depletes inventory.
