A recent analysis of Steam game data, employing the Boxleiter method to estimate revenue based on review counts, has identified sandbox as the genre with the highest "hit rate." This metric measures the percentage of games within a tagged genre that exceed $100,000 in estimated earnings. The study, conducted by Ichiro Lambe, Matt Martindale, and Dr. Tim Ermilov and published on weloveit.io, analyzed over 100,000 Steam games.

According to the report, sandbox games boast a hit rate of 27.3%. While "sandbox" is a broad tag encompassing diverse titles such as Terraria, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Project Zomboid, the data suggests that games offering a degree of player freedom tend to perform well commercially on the platform. The second highest hit rate was found in the FPS (First-Person Shooter) genre, with 21.6%, though this tag also includes games not solely focused on shooting mechanics, like Portal 2.

The top 10 genres by hit rate are as follows: Sandbox (27.3%), FPS (21.6%), RPG (19.4%), Simulation (16.9%), Visual Novel (16.5%), Horror (16.1%), Strategy (16.1%), Racing (15.8%), Roguelite (15.3%), and Sports (14.8%). The study notes that visual novels have maintained consistent popularity since 2014, while 2D platformers have seen a significant decline since their peak in 2016. Genres like Hidden Object games (5.4% hit rate) and 2D platformers (5.5% hit rate) were identified as having lower chances of commercial success, although the report acknowledges these genres may also involve lower development costs.

Outside of genre performance, the analysis also highlighted top-performing games by revenue for the week of August 18-25. Counter-Strike 2 and How to Fish secured the top two spots. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Mortal Shell 2, and Wardogs followed, with Apex Legends, Dota 2, Stalker 2, Helldivers 2, and Marvel Rivals rounding out the top ten. Notably, Star Wars Zero Company, released shortly after the reporting period, appeared at number 12 due to a late surge in pre-orders. The physics-based fishing simulator How to Fish was specifically mentioned for its strong performance, and the Wardogs beta was cited as a successful prelude to its upcoming full release. Stalker 2's reappearance on the chart was attributed to a recent major update and a significant discount.
