Prime Video has offered a glimpse of Sauron confronting a Balrog in the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, confirming the Dark Lord will employ a legendary item from the lore to face the creature.
During San Diego Comic-Con, Amazon revealed that Season 3 will feature the Balrog, voiced by Simon Pegg, in an encounter where Sauron seeks to harness power from the ancient monster to forge the One Ring. The Balrog, described as an intelligent and dangerous adversary, is depicted attempting to strike Sauron with its fiery sword. However, Sauron is shown effortlessly blocking the attack with the Iron Crown of Morgoth.
In J.R.R. Tolkien's texts, the Crown of Morgoth was created by Morgoth Bauglir, the first Dark Lord and Sauron's superior, to house the Silmarils and enhance his imposing presence. Morgoth, originally a Vala named Melkor, was the most powerful of the godlike beings before his descent into evil, and Sauron served him before succeeding him.
This depiction represents a significant departure from Tolkien's established narrative. The Balrog does not speak in any of the author's works, nor is there any indication that Sauron sought its counsel or possessed Morgoth's crown. In the source material, the Valar reforged Morgoth's Iron Crown into a collar used to bind him during his final defeat.
Questions remain about the identity of the Balrog featured in Season 3. Season 2 saw a Balrog awakened by Dwarven mining efforts in the Misty Mountains, with King Durin III sacrificing himself to contain it. It is unclear if this is the same creature and, if so, where its confrontation with Sauron takes place.
A hint of the Balrog's dialogue was revealed via a prompter for Simon Pegg, suggesting the line, "Crawl back to your world above." The upcoming season will also introduce the Nazgûl’s Second Age predecessors, the Nazgûl, exploring the origins of the Ringwraiths as men who served Sauron and craved power. The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, meaning much of the show's narrative predates the familiar timeline.
The first four episodes of The Rings of Power Season 3 are scheduled to premiere on November 11, 2026, with subsequent episodes releasing on November 18 and November 25. The season's official synopsis states that Middle-earth is at war five years after the fall of Eregion, with Sauron's armies conquering vast territories. Pockets of resistance remain in Khazad-dûm and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, while Sauron toils in Barad-dûr to forge the One Ring. The free peoples of Middle-earth must unite against Sauron's goal of total domination.
Amazon reports that The Rings of Power is one of Prime Video's most-viewed titles, with Season 1 being its biggest series premiere and Season 2 ranking among the Top 5 most-watched returning seasons. The series has attracted over 185 million viewers globally and is expected to conclude its planned five-season run.
