Sci-Fi Author Derek Künsken Confirms Role on Canceled Mass Effect 5

Award-winning science fiction author Derek Künsken has revealed that he spent five years contributing to the development of the now-canceled Mass Effect 5. The news comes as BioWare officially closes the chapter on the anticipated sequel, leading several former employees to share details about their involvement.

Künsken, known for his novel The Quantum Magician, worked closely with BioWare's creative director Parrish Ley and narrative director Mary DeMarle. He was part of a team tasked with developing story concepts, characters, lore, and the science fiction elements for the game. The team also included Catherynne Valente, who previously penned the Mass Effect tie-in novel Mass Effect Andromeda: Annihilation.

Both Künsken and Valente expressed a mix of sadness and pride regarding their work on the project. Valente commented that they were working on a "great game," suggesting BioWare had assembled a talented team aiming to deliver a narrative experience on par with the original Mass Effect trilogy. The writers have indicated that they may share more details about their contributions in the future, which could offer fans insights into the potential of the canceled title.

While Mass Effect 5 will not see the light of day, the franchise's legacy is set to continue through other media, including a television adaptation.
