Scrapped Black Flag Cutscene Appears to Tease Assassin's Creed III Prequel

A dataminer has uncovered a half-finished cutscene within Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced that strongly suggests it was intended as a teaser for an Assassin's Creed III prequel. The scene, reportedly taken down by Ubisoft via a copyright strike, features Edward Kenway conversing with Miko, a co-founder of the British Brotherhood of Assassins who later appears in Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

While Miko's presence might initially point to Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry, the dialogue in the deleted scene offers a different interpretation. Miko states, "The king is dead." Given that Black Flag Resynced concludes in 1722 and Freedom Cry begins in 1735, the same year Edward Kenway canonically dies, the "King" in question is likely George I of Great Britain, who died in 1727. This timeline aligns with the birth of Haytham Kenway, the antagonist of Assassin's Creed III, in 1725.

The period between Haytham's birth and Edward's death, from 1725 to 1735, is sparsely detailed in the Assassin's Creed canon, primarily covered in the in-universe diary Assassin's Creed: Forsaken. This narrative gap could be the "free real estate" Ubisoft might have intended to explore. Further connecting the pieces, Haytham Kenway personally assassinates Miko during the prologue of Assassin's Creed III.

It is noted that this cutscene was not present in the original 2013 release of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, implying it was created specifically for Black Flag Resynced before being ultimately scrapped. This decision could indicate a change in Ubisoft's plans or that the cutscene was an early placeholder. It's theorized that the voice actor for Edward Kenway, Matt Ryan, was brought back to record dialogue for Black Flag Resynced, potentially for this very scene, which might eventually surface in a future Resynced version of Freedom Cry.
