Footage has emerged of Star Wars: Magellan, a cancelled action RPG that would have allowed players to assume the roles of either a Jedi or a Mandalorian.
The game, codenamed Magellan, was being developed by Echtra Games and NaturalMotion for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 before its publisher, Zynga, shut down Echtra Games last year. MP1st has published the first publicly visible artwork and gameplay for Magellan, sourced from the portfolio of an artist who worked on the project.
Echtra Games, based in San Francisco, was founded by former Blizzard developers and released Torchlight 3 in 2020. The studio was acquired by Zynga but never shipped another project following the acquisition.
Magellan appeared to be more ambitious than Zynga's arena shooter Star Wars: Hunters, which was also set to be published by Zynga. Descriptions of Magellan indicate features such as at least two playable character classes, an NPC bond system for deeper companion interactions, and "shoot and loot" gameplay. The surfaced footage showcases a caped Mandalorian fighter, referred to as "The Exiled Mandalorian," and a Twi'lek Jedi, known as "The Hunted Jedi."
The gameplay demonstrates the Jedi class's ability to deflect laser fire with a lightsaber and use the Force to push enemies. The Mandalorian character is shown utilizing a jetpack for short-distance leaps and hovering, as well as employing a flamethrower. Enemies featured in the footage include Stormtroopers, droids, and large mechs, complete with explodable red barrels.
However, Magellan was ultimately canceled when Zynga closed Echtra Games. This project joins a list of other canceled Star Wars games, including Project Ragtag, Star Wars 1313, and Battlefront 3.
