Sean Gunn, the actor behind the motion capture for Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has announced his retirement from the role. The decision comes as Gunn, who also plays Kraglin Obfonteri, cited his age and the physical toll the performance takes as the primary reasons for stepping down.
Gunn, who recently turned 50, explained that the role requires him to maintain a deep "catcher's crouch" for extended periods, a position that has begun to affect his physiology, particularly his feet and ankles. While his knees remain unaffected, the constant pivoting in his feet and ankles has become too strenuous.
"Not that they've called but if they did, I don't think I could do the motion reference for Rocket anymore. I'm too old," Gunn stated in a recent podcast interview. He made it clear that while he enjoyed his time portraying the fiery raccoon, he can no longer physically endure the demands of the character.
Throughout his tenure, Gunn provided the physical performance for Rocket, with Bradley Cooper providing the voice in post-production. His ability to also portray Kraglin allowed him to stand and move more freely, a stark contrast to the squatting required for Rocket. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluded the trilogy with the apparent end of the Guardians' cinematic journey, though the post-credits scene hinted at a new team lineup and the potential for some characters to return in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. However, even if Rocket Raccoon were to appear again, it would be with a different actor performing the motion capture.
The future of the Guardians of the Galaxy as a team remains uncertain, with director James Gunn now leading the DC Universe. While Star-Lord is expected to return at some point, the likelihood of another Guardians film in the near future is unclear.
