Sega Considered Cancelling Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise Before Movie Success

Sega executives were prepared to discontinue the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise before the live-action film's considerable success helped to alter their perspective, according to Sonic Team leader Takashi Iizuka.

Iizuka, who has been involved with the blue blur for three decades as a designer, director, and producer across more than 30 games, stated that his tenure overseeing the character involved both "good times" and "the worst times." During the franchise's lowest points, he recounted being instructed by upper management to "cancel the entire franchise."

"I had to fight within the organization to keep the franchise as long as possible," Iizuka told One More Game. "The biggest milestone for me was the first movie, that had been a great hit and definitely changed the course of this franchise."

The first Sonic the Hedgehog film, released in 2020, achieved a worldwide gross of $320 million, initiating a successful blockbuster series. However, its initial reception was nearly derailed when the first trailer's design for Sonic was met with widespread criticism. Sega responded by delaying the film's release to redesign the character, aligning his appearance more closely with his video game counterpart.

Sega now intends to expand Sonic's presence beyond video games, with plans including a fourth film next year and an upcoming Netflix animated series. Iizuka anticipates "some sort of media almost every year from here on out," emphasizing that "The franchise itself is rooted in video games. We're just going to base everything upon the video games. That's our core principle."

Looking ahead for the Sonic game series, Iizuka has identified a player desire for "more emphasis on story." He also expressed interest in featuring Shadow the Hedgehog more prominently, a character he and fans have shown a particular affinity for. Iizuka recalled that Shadow was originally intended to be killed off after Sonic Adventure 2, but his significant popularity led to his revival in Sonic Heroes.

Currently, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled for release in theaters on March 19, and the character is also featured in a crossover event within Fortnite.
