Sega's Sonic Creative Officer, Takashi Iizuka, has detailed the creative solution that allowed the iconic Blue Blur to use firearms in Fortnite. While Shadow the Hedgehog is known for his anti-hero persona and weaponry, Sonic himself is typically characterized by his speed and reluctance to use guns.
Epic Games initially approached Sega about featuring Sonic in Fortnite, but the character's established design presented a challenge. "Sonic is a character that will never hold a gun," Iizuka explained to IGN. To overcome this hurdle, the development team conceptualized an "Android Sonic" variant, drawing inspiration from characters like Metal Sonic.
This android version was designed to be capable of holding and using weapons, including shotguns, thereby integrating Sonic into Fortnite's gameplay mechanics. "Because we made this Android version of Sonic, we were able to get this Android Sonic into Fortnite, have him hold a gun, and have him be able to really play inside Fortnite and be integrated into the game," Iizuka stated.
Adapting Sonic for Fortnite also required modifications to his appearance. To align with the proportional requirements of Fortnite characters and enable the use of various in-game items and weapons, Sonic's model was adjusted, notably featuring longer legs. Iizuka emphasized the collaborative effort with Epic Games to ensure the Android Sonic felt authentic to the character while meeting the game's design specifications.
In addition to Sonic and Shadow, other characters from the Sonic universe, including Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman, are available in Fortnite. The game also features a new area inspired by Sonic's Green Hill Zone.
