Sega Unveils $7,000 Sonic the Hedgehog Porcelain Sculpture for 35th Anniversary

Sega is commemorating the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog in 2026 with a highly exclusive and artistic collectible: a hand-painted porcelain sculpture priced at $7,000.

Crafted by the artisans at Japanese studio YOYOYO, the sculpture aims to capture Sonic's iconic status as "the world's fastest blue." To achieve an "eternal blue" finish, the studio utilized gosu, a cobalt-blue underglaze pigment known for its permanence. The artwork is designed to last for at least a century, utilizing durable Amakusa porcelain stone for its base, chosen for its ability to make colors appear vibrant. The artisans employed intricate underglaze painting techniques, incorporating traditional Japanese patterns like Seigaiha (waves) and Shippo (seven treasures) to create ornate and uniform designs across the 50 limited-edition pieces.

Special attention was also given to the red accents, which represent an "endless infinity trail." These glossy red elements are intended to convey motion and heat, with their appearance shifting depending on the viewing angle. Another blue hue, Yagasuri, features a stylized arrow-feather pattern symbolizing forward momentum. Each piece is unique, offering subtle details for close appreciation.

The creation process, involving meticulous skill and concentration, is detailed in a video released by Sega, offering a soothing look at the artistry involved. Each sculpture will come with a certificate of authenticity, a wooden stand, and a wooden presentation box. Prospective buyers must enter a lottery for a chance to purchase one of the 50 available sculptures.

This elaborate collectible arrives during a year without a new Sonic game release. While Sega has maintained a consistent output of titles throughout the 2020s, including recent entries like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars, the franchise is taking a planned break in 2026. Sega is focusing on updates for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and community events to mark the anniversary, alongside other merchandise, while development continues on the next mainline Sonic title.
