The anime adaptation of FromSoftware's action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, titled Sekiro: No Defeat, will stream internationally on Crunchyroll in January 2027. This upcoming series will not be a direct port of the version that received a limited theatrical run in Japan. Instead, the TV series will be a re-edited and extended iteration of the film.
Producer Tetsushi Suzuki has issued an apology to fans for any confusion regarding the different versions of the anime and the delay in announcing the TV release details. The original Japanese theatrical release, which was approximately two hours long, is being adapted into an eight-episode TV series. Assuming standard 24-minute episode lengths, this will add roughly an hour of content to the narrative.
Sources suggest that this expanded format could address some of the pacing and clarity issues identified in the theatrical cut. The film version was criticized for being rushed, disjointed, and lacking necessary context for both newcomers and established fans of the game. The additional time afforded by the TV series format is expected to allow for greater depth in storytelling, filling in narrative gaps that were present in the movie edit. New scenes, sequences, and animation improvements are confirmed for the TV broadcast, positioning it as the definitive version of the Sekiro anime adaptation.
