Seth Green, who portrayed Oz in the original 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' series, has broken his silence on the cancellation of the planned Hulu sequel, which would have featured a new slayer and Gellar in a supporting role. The series, titled 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,' saw its pilot episode filmed by showrunner Chloé Zhao before the streamer ultimately decided to cancel the project entirely.

While Green acknowledged he doesn't know the specific reasons behind the cancellation, he expressed his disappointment, stating that he was sad to hear the project was abandoned rather than perfected for fans. He had heard that Sarah Michelle Gellar was excited about the pilot, which he took as a positive sign.

Despite the setback, Green believes there is still significant potential for the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' franchise. He pointed to the show's continued popularity over two decades after its finale as evidence of a lasting audience. Green suggested that a revival could appeal to both new generations and existing fans, noting how parents shared the show with their children upon its DVD release. He also highlighted the series' role as a metaphorical guide for teenagers navigating the complexities of adolescence, likening the supernatural elements to common struggles of high school and dating.

"There remains an enormous opportunity for both a new generation and legacy parents to enjoy these stories together," Green told Polygon. "This show is such a good shepherd through that time. I think there are still plenty of stories to tell. I was definitely disappointed to hear they weren't going to go forward with it."
