Development on Shibuya Scramble Stories, the sequel to the acclaimed visual novel 428: Shibuya Scramble, appears to be progressing, with new gameplay footage emerging from a recent presentation. The project, however, remains embroiled in a complex narrative of crowdfunding setbacks and ongoing legal disputes.
The game's journey began with a successful crowdfunding campaign on the Japanese platform Ugboe, which raised 55 million yen (approximately $340,000). This initial success was overshadowed when the funds were inadvertently sent to an incorrect account, resulting in the loss of half the promised capital and initiating a legal battle.
To compensate for the shortfall and sustain development, the team launched a second crowdfunding effort. This campaign significantly exceeded its goal, raising 43 million yen (roughly $260,000), which was 436 percent of the requested 10 million yen. Further complicating matters, the project's lead director, Jiro Ishii, experienced a hospitalization that temporarily impacted progress.
Despite these challenges, the development team has showcased new gameplay that suggests a return to the stylistic elements appreciated by fans of the original. Shibuya Scramble Stories is planned as an ensemble piece following five characters whose lives intersect amidst a city-threatening plot. The narrative aims to blend the dramatic with the absurd, featuring new characters portrayed by influencer Namae wa Mada Nai, playing a college student journalist, and professional wrestler Unagi Sayaka, who is part of a group referred to as a 'Banana Cult'.
The recent presentation in Shibuya, where the new gameplay was shown, also coincided with further crowdfunding initiatives aimed at adding more characters to the game. The developers have been transparent about the allocation of currently secured funds while continuing efforts to recover the lost capital. For the footage presented, the development team collaborated with the owners of the Tokyu building at Shibuya Scramble Crossing, securing full access and support for the shoot. This partnership is expected to extend to the full game, with the building's owners officially supporting the project.
The original 428: Shibuya Scramble is remembered for its unique integration of live-action photography with a compelling narrative, offering a snapshot of Shibuya during its development era. The ongoing struggles of Shibuya Scramble Stories highlight the inherent risks and uncertainties of crowdfunding, yet the sustained dedication from its supporters indicates a continued path forward as the team seeks resolution to its financial and legal issues.
