Shrek 2 Remastered's PC Requirements Spark Fan Confusion

The upcoming PC remaster of the 2004 title Shrek 2 has revealed surprisingly demanding system requirements, leading to confusion and amusement among fans.

According to the game's Steam page, the minimum requirement to run Shrek 2 Remastered is a GeForce RTX 4060 or RTX 3060 Ti graphics card. For the optimal experience, the developer recommends a GeForce RTX 4070 or RTX 5070. The game also requires 12-16GB of VRAM, prompting questions about the visual enhancements that necessitate such hardware.

Fans took to social media to voice their surprise. One X (formerly Twitter) user commented, "Those swamp graphics better be baller." Another noted their ability to run Red Dead Redemption 2 at maximum settings, expressing concern that their PC might struggle with the remastered Shrek 2. The sentiment was echoed by another user who remarked, "Seems a bit much for a remaster of a GameCube game but if that’s what we need to render Shrek’s highly detailed green skin then so be it."

Some players drew parallels to the graphical demands of Grand Theft Auto 6, with one user joking that the developers "went full in with the GTA 6 aesthetics."

Concerns about "vibe coded" remasters have also surfaced, though there is currently no AI disclosure on Steam to indicate such development practices. Valve has previously requested developers to specify the use of AI in game creation or marketing.

Shrek 2 Remastered, developed by port specialist Aspyr, was revealed with a trailer that parodied the GTA 6 announcement. The game is scheduled to launch on November 10, just over a week before Grand Theft Auto 6's planned release. Aspyr is also known for its work on remasters and re-releases such as Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition, Deus Ex: Remastered, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, and the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection.
