Josh Brolin has confirmed that Sicario 3 is actively moving towards production. In an interview with Screen Rant, Brolin stated that the sequel "is happening" and that "production will ramp up soon."
While specific details about the project remain limited, the confirmation from Brolin, who starred as Matt Graver in the first two films, brings renewed hope for fans of the crime thriller series. Denis Villeneuve, who directed the original Sicario, is unlikely to return due to his current commitments, which include finishing Dune: Part Three and transitioning to his James Bond film project. Villeneuve's directorial debut on Sicario was pivotal in establishing his prolific career, but he did not direct the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which was helmed by Stefano Sollima.
Speculation regarding the involvement of Taylor Sheridan, the writer of the first two Sicario films, and Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the Mission: Impossible series, has circulated. Reports from 2023 indicated a potential collaboration between Sheridan and McQuarrie on the threequel. It remains unclear whether their involvement is in a writing, producing, or consulting capacity, especially given Sheridan's extensive work on various television shows.
Brolin has previously teased the possibility of a third installment, but this recent statement suggests a more concrete step towards its realization. The status of Benicio del Toro's return and the selection of a director and writer are yet to be announced.
