Sicario 3 is Officially Happening with Taylor Sheridan Returning to Write

Taylor Sheridan, the acclaimed writer behind series like Yellowstone and films such as Hell or High Water, is returning to the Sicario franchise to pen the script for a third film.

Variety reports that Sheridan is actively writing the screenplay for the upcoming movie, previously rumored to be titled Sicario: Capos. This marks a return to film for Sheridan, who has largely focused on television projects in recent years.

The original Sicario, released in 2015 and directed by Denis Villeneuve, explored the complexities of the U.S. war on drugs along the Mexico border. It starred Emily Blunt as an FBI agent drawn into a shadowy operation alongside CIA operative Matt Graver, played by Josh Brolin, and the enigmatic Alejandro Gillick, portrayed by Benicio del Toro. The film was praised for its grim realism and tense atmosphere.

Sheridan also wrote the 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which shifted focus to Brolin and del Toro's characters. While the sequel continued the franchise's exploration of the drug war, it received a less enthusiastic reception both critically and commercially compared to the original.

Details about the cast for Sicario 3 are still emerging, though Josh Brolin has indicated his intention to return for the third entry. Benicio del Toro's character also survived the events of the previous film, leaving open the possibility of his involvement. Denis Villeneuve is reportedly occupied with post-production on Dune Part Three and his next James Bond film, suggesting he may not return to direct.

In addition to his work on Sicario 3, Sheridan is also developing a film adaptation of the popular video game franchise Call of Duty, with Peter Berg attached to direct. That project is slated for a June 30, 2028 release. The Sicario sequel has been in various stages of development since 2018, with Brolin recently stating that production is expected to commence soon.
