Upcoming survival-horror title Signal Veil is putting a unique spin on the genre's traditional mechanics by weaponizing a vintage flip phone. Developed by Time Hunters, the game aims to blend classic horror elements with a focus on psychological dread, drawing inspiration from series like Silent Hill.
Aki, the game's protagonist, appears as a distressed anime-style schoolgirl navigating a terrifying environment. However, she is not defenseless. Her primary tool for interaction and defense is her mother's old cell phone, which can be used for both environmental cues and direct combat. Much like the crackling radio that signaled danger in Silent Hill, the phone will vibrate and emit static when monsters are near, contributing to the game's paranoia-inducing atmosphere.
Signal Veil features a sanity system that directly impacts gameplay. As Aki's mental state degrades, her combat style becomes more erratic and desperate. The developers have devised a unique parry system where the cell phone itself can be used to deflect enemy attacks. "We really like games with parry systems, so at some point we thought, 'What if you could use the phone to parry an enemy?'" developers stated in an interview. "It was one of those ideas that sounded strange at first, but once we tried it, we loved it."
Beyond parrying, the cell phone can also be utilized to stun enemies. Its camera flash can disorient foes, leaving them vulnerable to follow-up attacks. This mechanic underscores the game's theme that technology, while often a source of unease in the modern world, can also be a tool for survival.
Signal Veil does not yet have a release date but is available to wishlist on Steam.
