Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto has stated that writers working on the series are encouraged to read between 100 and 200 books annually. This emphasis on extensive reading stems from the critical role narrative plays in the Silent Hill games. Okamoto shared these insights during a Konami lecture titled "The Art of Producing Silent Hill."
Okamoto highlighted that for a producer, reading widely is vital, especially for a narrative-driven title like Silent Hill f. He also stressed the importance of thoroughly examining a writer's past work before hiring them, rather than relying solely on their reputation. This practice, which Okamoto referred to as a matter of "basic respect," allows for a deeper understanding of a writer's strengths, weaknesses, and stylistic nuances. As an example, Japanese horror writer Ryukishi07 was chosen for Silent Hill f due to his existing work, such as Hirugashi When They Cry, which indicated a familiarity with the Silent Hill universe.
Within the development team, a culture of mutual encouragement exists, with writers pushing each other to maintain a high volume of literary consumption. This approach is presented as a countermeasure against a broader cultural trend where deep engagement with source material may be declining, potentially due to factors like AI summaries and a general decrease in reading habits. Okamoto suggested that in such an environment, companies might otherwise rely on superficial familiarity rather than true comprehension.
The significance of this rigorous approach to reading appears to have paid off for Silent Hill f, with its story and narrative execution receiving praise. Okamoto indicated that the team intends to continue experimenting with the Silent Hill series, suggesting that future projects will also benefit from the depth and understanding gained through extensive literary exploration by its writers.
