Konami is continuing its exploration of the Silent Hill franchise with Silent Hill: Townfall, a new entry developed by Screen Burn Interactive in collaboration with Annapurna. Ahead of its release, a hands-on preview offered a glimpse into the game's first-person perspective, cinematic presentation, and its unsettling exploration of healthcare themes within a deserted Scottish-inspired town.
The experience begins with protagonist Simon Ordell emerging from the ocean onto the shores of St. Amelia. A cinematic 2:35:1 aspect ratio and first-person viewpoint immediately immerse the player in the desolate environment. Simon, a person of color, is positioned as an outsider to the town, a deliberate choice by the developers to mirror the player's own unfamiliarity with the setting. Writer and director Jon McKellan noted that this outsider status was key to their vision, aiming to place the player in a similar position of discovery and unease.
The town of St. Amelia is depicted as eerily deserted, with locked shops and an unsettling silence. McKellan shared that the Scottish setting was a natural fit for the team, many of whom grew up in similar environments characterized by heavy fogs, lending an authentic and chilling atmosphere to the game.
Initial gameplay involves answering a ringing phone in the town square, leading to a descent underground into tight, claustrophobic hallways. Here, the game introduces environmental puzzles and narrative elements tied to Simon's past, particularly his troubled love life. A mobile CRTV serves a dual purpose: providing hints for navigation by displaying cryptic clues like objects or dates, and functioning as a mini-map that indicates nearby enemies. However, the mini-map's utility is limited, displaying only one monster at a time, forcing players to constantly switch channels to track threats.
Upon returning to the surface, the environment shifts, introducing Kaiju-like monsters and suggesting that the town's afflictions are somehow fixable. The preview highlighted exploration of a coastal ghost town and an abandoned house, which contained items and clues essential to progressing the narrative. One puzzle involved restoring power by paying an outstanding electricity bill, requiring players to find prepaid cards in a shop guarded by a grotesque, armless, ax-headed monster. Combat mechanics were demonstrated, showcasing options like direct confrontation, stealth, or luring enemies into traps. The player's health bar and available weapons are crucial, with weapon durability playing a significant role. A unique death mechanic involves a black liquid injection, reviving the player with partial health outside of combat.
Further progression involves searching for Simon's love interest, a journey that requires navigating hazardous areas and using a scalpel to cut through obstacles. The theme of hospital care becomes increasingly prominent. The town's appearance changes dramatically, with a red filter and industrial pipes blocking paths, channeling players forward. Simon acquires a pistol, though ammunition is limited, leading to frequent encounters with monsters. Navigating tight backyards and utilizing environmental distractions like radios and thrown objects become key to survival.
Upon finding Simon's love interest, who is dressed as a nurse, reinforcing the game's medical theme, the CRTV emits a proximity alert. The preview concluded at this point, with the impression that Simon, like previous Silent Hill protagonists, will undergo significant self-discovery. Silent Hill: Townfall is slated for release on September 24 for PlayStation 5 and PC.
