Skyblivion Team Faces Legal Threats From Former Volunteer Over Code Contributions

The Skyblivion team, a volunteer-driven project dedicated to remaking The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion within Skyrim's engine, is facing legal threats from a former contributor. The dispute centers on code that the volunteer provided to the project.

The fan-led initiative, part of the TES Renewal Project, requires volunteers to replace all original Oblivion assets, a condition set by Bethesda. The project continued development even after Bethesda released its own Oblivion Remastered in April 2025.

According to a statement from the Skyblivion team, the conflict escalated after the volunteer's departure, with disagreements arising over the "continued use and maintenance" of their code. The team stated that they decompiled parts of the code to maintain functionality and resolve issues after their access to the original source code repository was revoked.

The volunteer subsequently issued legal threats, reportedly demanding personal information from the project leads. The Skyblivion team considers these demands disproportionate and has stated they cannot comply. They have sought legal counsel and expressed confidence in their right to use the submitted code. Nevertheless, to mitigate stress for their volunteers and ensure a clear separation, the team has removed the disputed code and is rebuilding the system from scratch.

Despite these measures, the legal threats have reportedly persisted. The team acknowledged that the former volunteer is "attempting to sue," though it remains unclear if a formal lawsuit has been filed. The volunteer's identity has not been disclosed.

The Skyblivion team urged fans to avoid a "witch-hunt" and expressed a desire for a swift resolution. They extended well wishes to the former volunteer and hope to finalize the remake for release.

This situation follows a previous announcement in December, where Skyblivion's release was postponed from 2025 to 2026.
