The development team behind the ambitious Morrowind remake mod Skywind has announced the passing of a key contributor, modder Kettlewitch, whose real name was David Purcell. Kettlewitch died on June 15th after a six-month battle with lung cancer. He was a significant figure in the Skyrim modding community and was involved in several other large-scale projects.

The future of Thras: The Coral Kingdom, a project where Kettlewitch served as a lead developer, is now uncertain following his death. Another developer on Thras, known as Bork, shared that Kettlewitch was deeply passionate about the project, continually devising new ideas despite his illness. Bork expressed hope that the work and dedication put into Thras might still be salvaged or incorporated elsewhere.

Skywind's team also released a statement acknowledging Kettlewitch's extensive contributions. They highlighted his role in implementing complex 3D assets, animations, and weather effects, as well as his creative use of NifSkope to integrate Morrowind mechanics into Skywind. Kettlewitch reportedly took charge of Skywind's 3D team during a critical period, providing much-needed direction and impetus. The team described him as a mentor and inspiration whose curiosity and experimentation advanced knowledge within the modding community. His passing is considered a significant loss.

Purcell was also previously a key developer on Skyblivion, another mod aiming to remake an Elder Scrolls title, this time Oblivion. The Skyblivion team has been contacted for comment.

The loss of Kettlewitch is felt by many in the modding community, with hopes that the projects he so passionately contributed to will endure in some form.
