Sledgehammer Games, a studio known for its work on the Call of Duty franchise, reportedly developed a prototype for a Halo multiplayer game that was ultimately canceled. The project, which was explored by Xbox, did not advance beyond its initial stages.
According to a report from Insider Gaming, which cites a source that previously provided accurate information regarding Halo: Campaign Evolved, Microsoft considered a proposition for Activision to assist in Halo game development. This included Sledgehammer Games creating a multiplayer experience for the franchise. The prototype was said to be in the early blockout phase, featuring only basic gameplay mechanics.
Following internal testing in June, Xbox decided against moving forward with the project a month later. While this specific prototype was canceled, the report indicates that Microsoft continues to explore the possibility of Activision contributing to Halo titles, though no official green light has been given.
The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Xbox in 2023 has opened the door for potential collaborations between the newly integrated studios. However, there has been little demonstrable overlap in development duties between Xbox and Activision's existing teams since the deal closed. As Xbox re-evaluates its overall gaming strategy, further cooperative efforts between its various development studios are anticipated, especially in light of recent layoffs across the division.
