Smash Bros. Pro Jason 'Mew2King' Zimmerman Barred From Event Over Bed Bug Concerns

Event organizers for Austin's Xtreme Fighters Showdown have barred professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player Jason Zimmerman, known as Mew2King, from participating due to concerns over a self-reported health issue. The decision was made after Zimmerman posted on social media about swollen red marks on his arms and legs, leading to speculation among attendees that he might spread bed bugs.

In a statement posted by event staff, they confirmed Zimmerman would not be able to attend "for the safety of our event." Zimmerman had initially sought public advice regarding the marks, suspecting flea bites from a pet but acknowledging that others suggested a bed bug infestation. He described the issue as reoccurring, with a previous outbreak covering his entire body.

Despite community stereotypes, bed bugs are known to be easily transmissible, capable of hiding in clothing and furniture. The concern over potential spread led Xtreme Fighters Showdown to take preventative measures. Team Liquid co-owner Juan "Hungrybox" DeBiedma defended Zimmerman, urging for grace and noting that the player was advised against attending and agreed to the decision.

Zimmerman later addressed the ban, stating he regretted his initial post and felt the photos were exaggerated. He believes the bites originated from a cat and that subsequent scabbing was from his own scratching. He also clarified that the worst of the condition was in the past, and recent swelling might be due to hand strain from practice. Zimmerman added that he would have withdrawn himself if he genuinely believed he posed a risk to the community.

"I feel like I could have just said nothing ever and been fine," Zimmerman wrote in a statement. "Makes me think how many people might potentially have a bad situation themselves but just not stupidly say anything publicly… I feel quite bad, dumb and frustrated." He has announced he will be taking a break from competing and streaming to focus on his health, a process he has been undertaking in recent months.
