The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise was once on the brink of cancellation, according to series boss Takashi Iizuka. He stated in an interview with One More Game that "higher-ups" had suggested discontinuing the entire series during its lowest points, but he fought to keep it alive.
Iizuka credits the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, released in 2020, as a major turning point for the franchise. "That had been a great hit and definitely changed the course of this franchise," he said. The success of the film is seen as instrumental in the series' continued existence, especially given the initial negative reception to the first movie's trailer, which necessitated significant redesign work.
Looking ahead, Iizuka indicated a commitment to a consistent stream of Sonic media, with plans for "releasing some sort of media almost every year from here on out." This content will span various forms, including anime, video games, and films. The upcoming fourth movie is notable for marking the first appearance of Amy. In parallel, Iizuka expressed a desire to incorporate more narrative depth into future games, influenced by the storytelling emphasis seen in the film projects.
